Tennis Falls Short Against Islanders

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University got singles wins from juniors Jasmin Buchta and Sanja Jolic but came up just short in its bid for a second-straight Southland Conference victory. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi held on for a 5-2 victory at the Thompson Family Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.

The doubles competition went in order with the Cardinals picking up the first victory of the afternoon. LU's team of Buchta and sophomore Amelie Vossgaetter defeated the Islanders' Carolina Bulatovic and Mariya Shumeika, 6-3, at the top spot.

With one doubles victory in the bag, the Cardinals were sitting in strong position as both remaining matches on courts two and three were locked in a tough battle. Unfortunately, the Islanders pulled out a victory in a tiebreak on court two, and they held on for a 7-5 decision at No. 3 for the point.

The Islanders were able to push their lead to 2-0 before LU (4-10/1-3 SLC) dented the scoreboard. The Cardinals' point came from Buchta on line one. She held on to defeat Bulatovic, 7-5, in the opening set and completely slammed the door shut with a 6-1 decision in the second.

The Cards again found themselves down two following the match on court No. 4, but Jolic got the Red and White right back in the fight. Jolic ousted A&M-Corpus Christi's Camille Townsend, with identical 6-4 set scores.

Trailing 3-2 with two matches remaining, the Cardinals needed to take both for the overall team win. The match at No. 5 singles was headed to a third after sophomore Natalia Garcia Molina's victory in the second, but the Islanders picked up a victory on court six for the overall team win.

A&M-Corpus Christi closed out the match by winning the match on court No. 5 to close out the scoring.

The Cardinals will be back in action Friday, Mar. 29, 2019, when they return to the Thompson Family Tennis Center to host Stephen F. Austin. The match against the Ladyjacks will begin at 2 p.m.
