Big Red Faces Showdown with Stephen F. Austin

BEAUMONT, Texas – The hottest team in the Southland Conference, Lamar University enters Saturday's game riding a wave of a six-game win streak. The Cardinals will look to keep that momentum going as they step on the court to face the defending Southland Conference tournament champions Saturday in the Montagne Center.

Winners in eight of their last nine ballgames, the Cardinals (17-12/10-6 SLC) have climbed out of the conference cellar to fifth place in the SLC standings just a half game back of Southeastern Louisiana and a game back of New Orleans. The Cardinals currently own a 2.5 games lead over Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks are a game up on four schools tied for seventh with a 6-9 record.

With the Cardinals having already locked up a spot in the postseason tournament, LU can now shift its focus toward improving its seed. The Cardinals still have a shot and climbing in the standings, but the only team that can potentially catch them is SFA, but for that to happen SFA needs to win out and have the tiebreakers fall in their favor.

The Lumberjacks (14-13/7-8 SLC) have struggled down the stretch dropping three of their past four and four of the last six. SFA is coming off an 18-point setback at Central Arkansas Wednesday. In addition to their trip to Beaumont, the 'Jacks still have a trip to Abilene Christian remaining on the schedule before closing the regular season at home against their rivals', Sam Houston State.

The Cardinals trail the all-time series to SFA, 28-35 (.444). Prior to last season's victory in Beaumont, the Lumberjacks had rattled off 10-straight wins but LU has recently turned the series back in their favor. The Cardinals have won three straight and enter Saturday looking for their first back-to-back season sweep since the 1998-99 and 1999-00 seasons. The Cardinals are 17-14 (.548) all-time in games played in Beaumont.

The Cardinals have also locked up their third consecutive winning season with their victory Wednesday against Houston Baptist. It's the first time since the 1996-97 through the 1998-99 seasons that LU has posted above .500 records in three consecutive years.

Mobiloil Credit Union is the official gameday sponsor for Saturday, and they will be handing out exclusive Cardinals' socks while supplies last. LU will also be holding another student organization challenge Saturday, presented by Universal Coin and Bullion. LU student organizations can win up to $500. The Cardinals will also be hosting a Mardi Gras Parade at halftime of the game.

The game against SFA will tip off at 4:30 p.m. from the Montagne Center. It can be heard live on Newstalk 560 KLVI and will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Tickets for all LU events can be purchased through the ticket office by calling (409) 880-1715, or by logging on to www.LamarCardinals.com.

Moving forward to the regular-season finale against McNeese, LU will be offering a special for the Saturday, Mar. 9th game against the Cowboys. The Cardinals will be offering a special $1 ticket for the doubleheader against Cowboys.
