CONROE, Texas – The Lamar University softball team wrapped up play at the Scrap Yard tournament on Sunday afternoon as they played Wisconsin and Texas Tech. The Cards were defeated by Wisconsin, 6-0 (6 inn.) and defeated by Texas Tech, 3-1.
Lamar vs. Wisconsin
The Badgers struck early in the contest against the Cards. Wisconsin scored one run in each of the first two innings of play. In the second inning, the Badgers looked as if they would score more than one run, however,
Taylor Murphy fielded a grounder and threw a girl out at the plate. The next batter, singled to center field and tried to score again, however, the
Shannon Klaus, threw a Badger out at the plate.
Wisconsin added two runs on two hits in the third inning and extended its lead to 4-0 over the Cards.
In the bottom of the third inning,
Elizabeth Castillo singled to second base giving the Cards its first hit of the game. However, they could not get anything else going and trailed 4-0 after three innings of play.
The Badgers tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning growing its lead to 6-0.
LU picked up its second hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Savana Mata reached on a bunt single. With one out, the Cards stole second base and
Shaina Amir drew a walk putting two runners on base. However, the Cards could not get a run across the board.
In the top of the sixth inning the Badgers Konwent hit a two-run home run putting Wisconsin ahead, 8-0.
The Cards could not get anything going in the bottom of the inning and were defeated 8-0 by Wisconsin.
Lamar vs. Texas Tech
The Red Raiders struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Russell hit a sac fly that scored one putting Texas Tech ahead, 1-0. After the Cards went down in order in the top of the second, the Red Raiders answered back and scored one run on three hits and lead LU, 2-0 after two innings of play.
The Cards got the bats going in the top of the fourth inning. Klaus drew a walk and went to second on a ground out. With two outs, Klaus went to third on a wild pitch. She came into score on
Taylor Davis single to left field. After three and a half innings of play, the Cards trailed 2-1.
In the fifth inning, Murphy drew a walk to get things started for LU, however the next three hitters were retired ending the inning.
After allowing two runs over the first two innings of play,
Julia Voluntad settled down and limited the Red Raiders at the plate. She allowed one more run, an RBI double to center field in the sixth inning. The sixth inning ended with Klaus throwing out a Red Raider at the plate.
Needing to score in the seventh, the Cards Davis reached on a Red Raider error. However, she was the only player to reach base for the Cards LU was defeated 3-1 by Texas Tech.
Lamar return to action on Thursday, Feb. 14 when they play the Japan National Team at Florida Gulf Coast. First pitch for the Cards vs. Japan is set for 6:30 p.m. The Cards follow by playing in the FGCU Invite.
