COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Junior
Sanja Jolic recorded a three-set victory at Texas A&M Saturday afternoon but Lamar University fell to the Aggies, 6-1. Friday's match marked the second outing in as many days for the Cardinals. The youthful Cardinals pushed two singles matches to a third set before bowing out.
"We fought hard today against one of the top teams in the nation," said LU head coach
David Wong. "Sanja played really well and was able to overcome some adversity to win in the third set. I thought that Jasmin and Amelie played well enough to win, but the breaks didn't go our way."
The Cardinals were involved in three close matches in doubles play to start the afternoon. The Cardinals' No. 1 team of
Jasmin Buchta and Amelia Vossgaetter dropped a 6-3 decision to Texas A&M's No. 1 doubles squad of Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova. It was a similar story for Natalia Garcia Molina and Biance Vitale at the No. 2 position. The duo came up just short dropping a 6-3 decision to A&M's Katya Townsend and Lucia Quitero.
The Cardinals picked up a first-set win on court No. 3 from junior
Sanja Jolic, while sophomore
Amelie Vossgaetter battled back from a 6-0 loss in the opening set to defeat A&M's Dorthea Faa-Hviding to force a third set.
Unfortunately for the Red and White, Texas A&M picked up first set wins on the other four singles courts and finished off those matches with straight-set victories. With the Aggies leading 5-0, the Cardinals were looking to cut into the deficit on courts 3 and 6.
After recording a 7-5 victory in the first set, Jolic dropped the second set to A&M's Renee McBryde, 6-3, but Jolic had the last laugh. Jolic responded with an 11-9 victory in the super tiebreak. LU's attempt at a second point came up just short as Vossgaetter dropped a 6-0, 4-6, 11-9 decision at No. 6 singles.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they take on UNLV in College Station, Texas.
