Cardinals Add Local DT on Early Signing Day

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Less than a week after taking over the reins of the Lamar University football program, first-year head coach Blane Morgan has signed his first athlete. Beaumont United standout Jakevian Wilson signed a National Letter of Intent Wednesday morning to continue his education and play football for the Red and White.

Wednesday's signing marks the third year that schools can sign players in December – the early signing period – nearly two months before National Signing Day in February.

Wilson signing comes at perfect time for Morgan who takes over a Cardinals squad that is graduating three starters from its defensive line, including two interior linemen. In addition to that, the Cardinals have three other linemen preparing for their senior season in 2020.

Wilson's signing not only fills a need on the Cardinals roster, but he also becomes the answer to future trivia questions as he is also Morgan's first signee from the Golden Triangle.

A former district defensive MVP, Wilson led one of the top defensive fronts in the state of Texas in 2019. Led by Wilson's presence in the middle, the Timberwolves imposed their will over opposing running backs. A two-time Super Gold selection, Wilson wrapped up his senior season by garnering first-team honors from the Beaumont Enterprise this past season.

Wilson's talent on the field was recognized at an early age. The Beaumont native recorded 29 tackles, including 23 solos stops, during his junior season. Of his 29 tackles, eight of them came behind the line of scrimmage and two were for sacks.

Wilson chose to play for his hometown team over NCAA FBS program New Mexico State.
