Avery Sullivan recorded another double-double, but homestanding TCU took advantage of a 21-5 run late in the first half to build a lead and not surrender it. The Cardinals end the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 6-5 overall regular.
The Cardinals finished the day with a 33 percent performance after knocking down 19-of-57 from the field. The Cardinals were 5-of-16 (.313) from three-point range, four of those belonging to sophomore
Davion Buster. The Cardinals were outrebounded by nine on the day, despite Sullivan's 13 rebounds and freshman
David Muoka's 11.
TCU was 32-of-69 (.464) from the field, including 13 three-pointers. The Horned Frogs shot nearly 45 percent from three-point range on the afternoon. Sullivan and Buster finished the contest with 14 points, with the majority of Buster's baskets come from long-range.
The Cardinals scored the first five points of the game and LU held its advantage until the 11:32 mark. Big Red jumped out to an early lead due to the hot early shooting of Buster who knocked down two quick threes. TCU took advantage of a couple Holmes' fouls and LU turnovers to claim their first lead of the game, 16-14. TCU kept their foot on the gas and rattled off a 21-5 run to take a 22-point lead into the locker room, 41-19.
The Cardinals struggled from the field in the opening 20 minutes shooting less than 30 percent from the floor, including just a 2-of-7 (.286) effort on three balls. LU was victimized by turnovers in the first half coughing up the ball 14 times which TCU converted into 16 points. LU forced their hosts into just six first-half turnovers.
After a slow start, the Horned Frogs finished the game 17-of-35 (.486) from the field, including seven three-pointers. TCU also held a slim lead on the glass, 21-16.
After TCU built their advantage to 24, the Cardinals mounted a small run sparked by an
Ellis Jefferson three-ball and a Muoka block on an attempted dunk. The Cardinals rattled off a 12-0 run to trim the deficit to 56-44 with 9:20 remaining before the Horned Frogs could get back on the scoreboard.
The Cardinals held serve until 4:30 remaining in the contest not allowing their hosts to extend their lead. Unfortunately, for the Red and White, TCU closed out the contest by scoring the game's final 11 points.
The Cardinals return to action Wednesday when they open Southland Conference play against Southeastern Louisiana. The game against the Lions will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center and will be broadcast live on Newstalk 560 KLVI.
