Hot Start Cools Off for Cards

BEAUMONT, Texas – Running away with the first set, Lamar University (8-14, 3-9 SLC) couldn't hold on Saturday against Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (16-9, 9-3 SLC). The Cardinals fell in four sets to the Islanders.

Abigale Nash led in kills for Lamar with 14 kills and earned her 13th double-double on the year with 11 digs. Annika Slovak also had a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs. Dannisha House reached 10 kills and had a block, and Malaysia Murdock added in another eight kills. Erin Pequeno totaled 11 digs.

Lamar took control of the first set relatively early and held on through seven ties, winning the set 25-21. Nash spiked six of her 14 kills in the first set and hit at a .333 percentage, and Slovak had 11 assists. The Cards hit .216 in the set while limiting A&M-Corpus to .000.

The Islanders opened the second set by capturing the first point and didn't look back. A hitting percentage of 51.9% catapulted A&M-Corpus Christi to a quick 25-10 win.

Big Red and A&M-Corpus Christi traded the lead three times and had four more ties in the set, but after the Islanders took the lead at 14-13, Lamar couldn't wrest control of the game back. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the set 25-18.

Lamar held an early lead in the fourth set, but the Islanders quickly fought back in. Lamar would cut that Corpus lead down to just two points several times, including at 18-16 on back-to-back kills by House. Unfortunately, the Islanders won the next five points to jump ahead 23-16, and Big Red just didn't have enough time to work with. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the set 25-18 and the match in four sets.
