Lawson Named SLC Defensive Player of the Week

| By:
FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University junior defensive back Michael Lawson has been named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by league officials Monday morning. The honor comes following the Cardinals upset of nationally-ranked Sam Houston State on Saturday in Huntsville.

Lawson led the Cardinals defense with 10 tackles, two interceptions and a pass breakup, in a game that turned out to be a defensive slugfest. The two teams combined for 14 points through regulation and were forced to a triple overtime before the outcome was decided. The Cardinals' lone score in regulation came from the defense.

For his part, Lawson – who leads the Cardinals with 43 tackles and four interceptions – was key in the defense's efforts. In addition to his 10 stops he picked off two passes – the first multi-interception game of his career. The first pick thwarted a Sam Houston drive and the second ended the game as it came in triple overtime.

The Cardinals (4-3/2-2 SLC) have moved back into the thick of the conference chase. The Red and White will be back in action Saturday when they travel to San Antonio, Texas, to face defending conference co-champion UIW. The game against the UIW Cardinals will kick off at 4 p.m. from Benson Stadium and will be broadcast live on KLVI.
