Big Red Falls Short Against LSU

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University was unable to overcome two first-half goals falling to LSU, 3-0, Tuesday evening at the LU Soccer Complex. It was a game where the score was not indicative of how close the action was on the field.

The Cardinals were outshot on the night but only by two, 13-11. The Red and White finished the night with one more save than the Tigers, 4-3.

"I think anyone who watched this game would tell you it was closer than the 3-0 score would indicate," said LU head coach Steve Holeman. "LSU is a very direct team and they played a lot of balls in behind us. I thought we handled it well. We held our line well because they were offsides seven times in the first half but the one time they got in behind us they finished – good teams will do that.

"We made a couple mistakes tonight and they capitalized on each one. That is what good teams do," added Holeman.

Fans had plenty of time to get settled in at the LU Soccer Complex as the game shaped up as a defense struggle early. It appeared the Cardinals had netted the game's first goal on a header from senior Kelso Peskin, but the goal was waived off by the officials. The game remained locked at a scoreless tie until the 25th minute when the Tigers' Marlena Cutura received a pass from a throw in and scored from 15 yards out to take the first lead of the game.

After the goal, the Cardinals went right back to their strong defensive play keeping their guests off the scoreboard for the next 13-plus minutes. The Tigers made it a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute on a goal from Adrienne Richardson. The score would remain 2-0 heading into the locker room.

Although the Cardinals managed to keep the ball on the visitor's side of the field in the second half, they were unable to put one in the back of the net. LSU closed the game by tacking on one final score in the 55th minute of action.

"The part that makes this tough for us as coaches is the fact that it was an evenly played game. At the end of the day, they finished on three of their shots and we came up empty," added Holeman.

The Red and White will be back in action Friday when they return home to host UTSA. The game against the Roadrunners will begin at 7 p.m. from the LU Soccer Complex.
