Cardinal Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - It took an extra 19 minutes in the piney woods to determine the winner, but Lamar University's soccer team emerged victorious Sunday in a double overtime game at Stephen F. Austin. Juliana Ocampo provided the winning advantage with two goals, including the game-winner, to give LU a 3-2 victory.

"Juli played extremely well and we needed that today," said head coach Steve Holeman. "She's very calm on the ball and a terrific presence for us on the field. She turned in a heroic performance for us again, very similar to what she did against UTSA."

Lamar out-shot SFA 25-17 on the day and had two more shots on goal, but a few lucky breaks allowed Stephen F. Austin to tie the game up twice. Through regulation the two teams had 14 shots apiece, but in extras Lamar had 11 shots to SFA's three, a significant advantage that came about largely due to the Cards' push to maintain control of the ball.

Scoreless through almost the entire first half, Lucy Ashworth put Lamar out front when the Ladyjack defender had her pocket picked. Ashworth beat the goalie to the far side and fired a shot in, putting Big Red ahead 1-0. That score remained through the rest of the first half.

SFA's first big break came in the 50th minute. Caylon McMillan fired off a shot and it rebounded back to her, and on her second attempt the ball made it just past Sandra Nygard. The game was tied 1-1.

In the 65th minute Lamar again pushed its advantage; a free kick by Rubi Villegas set up Ocampo, who caught the pass and with a backward flick off her foot scored her fourth goal of the year. Lamar led 2-1.

Stephen F. Austin again used a weird rebound to knot the game up. Katie Jennings found the ball at her feet following a block of Katelyn Termini's shot, and Jennings scored on the rebound.

LU had eight more shot attempts through the two overtime periods but couldn't take over until just a few seconds remained on the clock. While the PA announcer counted down the final 10 seconds, a shot by Sophia Manibo was saved and rebounded to Ocampo, who scored with two seconds to go.

"This is one of the best wins I've ever been a part of, which is saying something after all the years I've spent in coaching," said Holeman. "We had so many things stacked against us. Sunday games are never easy and road games are even tougher. Lamar has never defeated SFA on the road before and the injuries we were facing had forwards playing on the back line and mid-fielders near the front. To overcome all that along with having surrendered the lead twice showed just how determined this team was to win today."

Lamar returns to action on Oct. 5 when Southeastern Louisiana comes to the LU Soccer Complex.
