BEAUMONT, Texas - Returning to the friendly confines of LU Soccer Complex, Lamar University's women's soccer team will look to continue an 11-game home winning streak when Southern University comes to town on Friday. The Cardinals and Jaguars will meet on the pitch at 7 p.m.
THE LAST TIME OUT - AT ORAL ROBERTS
Lamar University rallied with two goals in the second half but was unable to overcome an early deficit falling at Oral Roberts, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the Case Soccer Complex. The loss drops LU to 2-2 (.500) on the young season.
Â
"Today's outcome wasn't for a lack of effort," said LU head coachÂ
Steve Holeman. "It was one of those days where we had a lot of things work against us. Coaches will tell you that Sunday games are tough, especially on the road. You combine that with 90-degree heat and you need depth to be successful. We had two players go down early and that is tough to overcome but our ladies never stopped fighting.
Â
"Also, take nothing away from Oral Roberts. This is a very talented team. ORU is a very good possession team, and I felt like we out played them in the second half. We were able to cut the lead to one, but they took advantage of a couple mistakes to score their third goal," added Holeman.
Lamar vs. Southern University - August 31 at 7 p.m.
With two losses to NCAA Division I opposition and ties with an NAIA school and an NCAA Division III school in exhibition games, Southern has struggled a bit to open the 2018 season. The Jags are led by Jeremy Fontenot, who is 4-29-2 in his third season at the helm. Last year the Cards took a
6-0 shutout victory over the Jags at LU Soccer Complex. Six different Cards scored a goal in the game including
Kelso Peskin, who had a goal and two assists,
Lucy Ashworth, and
Hailey Loupe.
Juliana Ocampo had two assists in the win.
The Jags have failed to score a goal in their two Division I games, falling 0-4 to North Dakota and 0-3 to Southeastern Louisiana. Jessica Gutierrez leads the team in shots taken with four, and Sophia Zavala has attempted two this year.
Goalies Ckioma Eriken and Amber Zarate have split time in the net with starter Eriken saving 75 percent of shots taken while allowing 3.33 goals a game.
BANNER UNVEILING
Big Red plans to unveil its 2018 championship banners, including the SLC Regular season championship, the SLC Tournament championship, and the NCAA Tournament banner just before the game starts against Southern.
