FORT WORTH, Texas – A solo homer with two outs in the third and a one-out single in the seventh were the difference Friday in a pitchers' duel between Lamar University (15-32) and Texas Christian University (25-18). The Cardinals ultimately fell to the Horned Frogs 2-0 after coming close to tying the game several times.
Â
Scoreless through the first two innings, TCU took a one-run in the bottom of the third. After
Tanner Driskill got the first two outs on a flyer to center field and a grounder to himself, the third Frog batter had a 2-2 count before making hard contact. It flew over the right center wall to give TCU a 1-0 lead. Driskill bounced back and held TCU scoreless through the sixth.
Â
Lamar came within 90 feet of scoring in the top of the fifth.
Avery George singled up the middle with two outs. He stole second with
Chad McKinney at the plate and reached third when the errant throw from the catcher to second ricocheted off George's helmet. McKinney made good contact with the ball and it looked like it would fall in between the second baseman and the center fielder, but the TCU center fielder just made it in time to reach out and catch McKinney's fly ball.
Â
Two Cardinals came close in the top of the sixth.
Philip Ingram led off with a single to left, stretching his reached-base streak to a career-best 26 games and his hit streak to eight games.
Robin Adames joined Ingram on the base paths with a single off the wall in right, and both advanced on a 2-3 grounder from
Cole Coker. Unfortunately, a strikeout ended the inning, stranding two in scoring position.
Â
TCU tacked on one more in the bottom of the seventh on two hits and a hit-by-pitch. Driskill got the first out of the inning on a liner to center before beaning the next batter, which ended his evening.
Chet Jones relieved him with a runner on first. Two hits scored the runner before Jones struck out the next batter he faced and got the final out on a snazzy putout combo from
Grant DeVore to Ingram on second. TCU led 2-0 after seven.
Â
Logan LeJeune led off the ninth with a single past short, and after a strikeout went down on a close play at second in an apparent fielder's choice. A second fielder's choice ended the game.
Â
Lamar returns to action on Saturday with
Noah Sills on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
