LU Drops Battle of Redbirds

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Lamar University's four-match win streak was snapped at four Saturday afternoon by the Southland's Conference's other Cardinals. Incarnate Word recorded a 5-2 victory over LU at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center to prevent the Red and White from extending its season-long win streak.

The two teams battled to four three-setters in singles competition, but LU found itself on the business end in three of those matches.

Big Red entered singles competition down a point after a hard-found doubles competition that saw LU drop 6-4 decisions on courts 2 and 3. The Cards inability to snag a win on either court was made even more heartbreaking since junior Sebastian Santibanez and freshman Arthur Serafim were locked in a 5-5 tie at No. 1 doubles.

The lead was pushed to 2-0 after a UIW three-set victory on court two. The Cardinals put a stop to the bleeding moments later when freshman Nicolas Mayr defeated UIW's Ivanhoe Lissanevitch, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5 singles.

San Antonio's version of the Cardinals pushed the lead back to two following a three-set winner at line 3 singles, but LU answered right back at No. 4 singles. Junior Logan Powell found himself in some hot water after dropping the opening set to Joey Vatanadilok, but Powell rallied. Powell finished off his match with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision for the win.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to come through on the final two courts dropping three-set decisions on courts 6 and 2, respectively.

The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they remain in the Alamo City to face UTSA. The match against the Roadrunners is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
