Cardinals fall to 12th-ranked Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Lamar University Cardinals found out why 12th-ranked Texas A&M is one of the toughest teams to beat on their home field, as the host Aggies were 8-0 winners over LU in six innings on Wednesday night. Texas A&M improved to 27-2 at the Aggie Softball Complex this season.

Texas A&M (30-7), which was looking to rebound from being swept in a three-game SEC series at No. 6 Florida over the weekend, received a solid start from right-hander Samantha Show (9-3), who was looking for a bit of redemption of her own. Show, who lasted just 1/3 of an inning against Florida, walking five batters, allowed three hits over six innings for the complete-game shutout. She walked three and struck out seven.

"Any time you play a team of that caliber, you are going to be challenged," LU coach Holly Bruder said. "When you make mistakes, it's going to show up on the scoreboard."

Kendall Talley had two hits for the Cardinals (18-15), while Shannon Klaus had the other LU hit. LU designated player Taylor Davis saw her streak of reaching base safely end at 21 straight games. The Cardinals were short two starters due to illness.

The Aggies scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning off LU starter Taylor Gruell (7-5) to grab the lead they would never relinquish. Kaitlyn Alderink drew a one-out walk after being given a new life after a dropped foul ball. Ashley Walters drove Alderink home with a two-out single before Kristen Cuyos followed with a double to score Walters.

Texas A&M added single runs in the second and fourth innings off Gruell. Tori Vidales doubled home Keeli Milligan in the second, while Riley Sartain hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center in the fourth.

Gruell allowed six hits and four runs, two earned, over four innings, walking two.

Texas A&M added three runs in the fifth inning off reliever Laura Napoli, as Walters hit a two-run homer before Cuyos hit a solo shot, both to left-center. The Aggies closed out the game on the run rule in the sixth inning with three straight hits to start the inning. Vidales ended the game with a run-scoring single that plated Blake-Ann Fritsch as the Aggies improved to 8-0 all-time vs. the Cardinals.

"They made adjustments," Bruder said of the Texas A&M hitters. "We didn't do that enough. But some of our younger players are starting to do that. It was great to see Kendall Talley get two hits."

Napoli went one-plus innings, allowing six hits and four runs, all earned.

NOTES: The Cardinals turned their Southland-Conference leading 18th double play of the season in the third inning as Gruell snared a line drive and threw to Shelby Henderson at first to double off the runner. The start of the game was delayed by 32 minutes because of heavy rain that fell in College Station earlier in the day. The Cardinals are 0-5 against top-20 teams this season. "We're not scared to play these teams," Bruder said. "These games are going to make us better."
