SAN ANTONIO, Texas – With a series win on the line Sunday at the University of Incarnate Word (15-11, 5-4 SLC),
Payton Robertson smashed a two-run homer over the left-field fence, briefly fueling comeback aspirations for Lamar University (5-19, 1-8 SLC). Ultimately it wasn't quite enough as Big Red fell 12-2 in eight innings in a Cards vs. Cards Southland Conference series.
After a scoreless first inning Incarnate Word drew first blood in the bottom of the second, putting two across on a two-out homer with a 1-2 count. San Antonio's Cardinals would add two more runs in the third on three hits, and led 4-0 heading into the fourth inning.
Neither team scored in the fourth, and Lamar took two back in the fifth.
Cole Girouard led off the inning with a single to left field and reached second on a 5-3 groundout from
Rhett McCall. Robertson came to the plate with one thing on his mind, swinging on the first pitch he saw. The sophomore smashed the pitch, knocking the laces off as the ball traveled in the woods behind left field. Lamar had pulled within two runs, 4-2, heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Incarnate Word responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning on three hits, and struck again with three runs in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth, winning 12-2.
