Cardinals Fall in SLC Semifinals

BEAUMONT, Texas – Friday night's soccer game did not have the ending the Lamar University women's soccer team was looking for in the Southland Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Semifinals. The seventh seed, Stephen F. Austin, knocked out the Cards with a goal in the 83rd minute. The Ladyjacks defeated LU, 2-1.

"This one game does not define us and our season. It was a great game, it was competitive, it's the Southland Conference Semifinals," Head Coach Steve Holeman said. "SFA is used to playing for Championships. We knew it was going to be a tough game and it was a back and forth affair. They limited our chances. SFA plays in a system you rarely see, we see it once a year when we play SFA and we didn't do a good job at solving it. Our effort was there, and we had a great attitude and we showed resilience and at the end of the day we fell a little short."

In the opening half, the Ladyjacks controlled possession on Lamar's half of the field. In the 21st minute of the contest, SFA scored the first goal of the match. Katelyn Termini collected a loose ball and fired a shot that got past Sandra Nygard on the right side putting the Ladyjacks ahead, 1-0.

The lead did not last long as the Cardinals slowly started gaining possession. Twelve minutes after SFA's goal the Cardinals struck back. Lucy Ashworth sent a cross into the box and Kelso Peskin recorded a diving header that found the back of the net tying the game at 1-1, which would be the halftime score.

Coming out of halftime, the Ladyjacks offense came out looking to break the scoreless tie. A minute into the half, Sophia Fondren had a shot go off the crossbar and over the next minute and a half, SFA had three shots on goal that Nygard saved.

Late in the half, the Cards mounted an attack as Ashworth had a shot that was saved by Maddie Talbot.

Stephen F. Austin broke the tie in the 83rd minute. Fondren took a corner kick for the Ladyjacks and she found Carli Arthurs in the box who headed the ball into the net for SFA's second goal of the game.

The Cards could not get another shot in the game and were defeated 2-1 by the Ladyjacks.

"This senior class is special. I have been doing this for over 20 years and this is one of my favorite senior classes of all-time," remarked Coach Holeman. "Four quality players, four quality individuals and all of them had postseason accolades. Four special people that will leave their imprint on the program."

The Cardinals finish the season with a record of 12-6-2 on the season.

Following Sunday's Southland Conference Championship match, Cardinals Madison Ledet and Sophia Manibo were named to the Southland Conference All-Tournament Team.
