CHOUDRANT, La. – Riding the wave of two strong rounds to close out the David Toms Intercollegiate, the Lamar University men's golf team picked up Monday at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate where they left off last week. The Cardinals posted two strong rounds, including three players in the overall top 20, to sit fourth.
The Cardinals (291-292 – 583) enter the final round just three strokes back of Cincinnati. UAB leads the tournament with a 556.
After a tough three rounds in Baton Rouge a week ago, freshman
Hugo Hellman bounced back in a major way Monday to lead the Cardinals. LU's rookie opened the day with a three-under par 69 in the opening round of the par-72 Squire Creek Country Club course. He leads the Cardinals with a two-round 142 and currently sits 10
th overall.
Senior
Eason Wang sits just a stroke out of the top 10 with a two-round score of 143. He was three-over par in the opening round but bounced back with a four under in the second.
Junior
Cody Banach is tied for 20
th with a 145. He carded rounds of 72 and 73 to post a top 20 spot heading into the final round. Sophomore
Nikolai Schaffrath closed out the scoring for LU with a two-round 75-78 – 153 and is tied for 61
st overall. Freshman
Kevin Lee ended the day with a 77-78 – 155 to finish tied for 70
th with one more round remaining.
The Cardinals will close out the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate Tuesday with final round of 18 holes. The last day of the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
