Soccer's unbeaten streak ends at five games

CONWAY, Ark. – The Lamar University Cardinals saw their five-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 4-1 loss at Central Arkansas in a Southland Conference women's soccer game Friday night.

The Cardinals (6-3-1 overall, 1-1-0 Southland) struck first as Kelso Peskin scored on a diving header on a cross from Lucy Ashworth for her third goal of the season at the 25:48 mark. The LU lead would be short-lived as the Bears (5-5-0, 2-0-0) tied it 9:09 later as Jordan Slim converted a pass from Hadley Dickinson to make it 1-1.

Central Arkansas took the lead for good with 7:11 remaining in the opening half as Alex Smith beat LU goalkeeper Lauren Lovejoy from four yards away to give UCA a 2-1 lead heading into intermission.

The Bears made it 3-1 just 10:20 into the second half on Camille Bassett's second goal of the season. Dayna Mounie closed out the scoring with her fourth goal of the season as she took a pass from Bassett and scored with 26:30 remaining.

Central Arkansas outshot LU 16-8 on the night, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Lovejoy made two saves for the Cardinals. Lauren Mercuri made one save for Central Arkansas.

"Central Arkansas is a good team. They're athletic, they're fast," LU coach Steve Holeman said. "They are very dangerous on the attack. They attacked us from all angles. This was definitely a learning experience for us.

"We'll watch the game film and look at areas where we need to improve. We've come a long way, but we're not there yet. But we're going to keep getting better."

The Cardinals stayed in Conway overnight on Friday. The team departs for Natchitoches, Louisiana, on Saturday as they prepare for a conference game at Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"We have to shake this off and get ready for Northwestern State," Holeman said. "That's what we are focused on now."

The Cardinals return home next weekend to Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. Friday and Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. Oct. 1. For ticket information, call 409-880-1715, or CLICK HERE.
