Peskin scores 4 goals in LU's 6-1 win over ULM

BEAUMONT, TexasKelso Peskin put on quite an exhibition in Saturday's exhibition game.

Peskin scored four goals to power the Lamar University women's soccer team to a 6-1 win over the visiting Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks at the LU Soccer Complex in the only preseason tuneup for the Cardinals before Friday's season opener vs. Southern University.

"Of course, it's wonderful to score four goals in my first game at Lamar, but I couldn't have done it without my teammates," said Peskin, who transferred to LU after two seasons at Tyler Junior College. "This is a team effort. It doesn't matter who scores the goals, as long as we win."

The Cardinals dominated the Warhawks from start to finish, outshooting ULM 32-4 and holding a 19-3 advantage in shots on goal for the game.

"What a turnaround from last season when we didn't have a shot in the entire first half against ULM." LU coach Steve Holeman said. "We're more dynamic this season and we have more depth."

Peskin gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at the 20:28 mark of the first half as she converted a pass from Samantha Moreno. That was the only goal of the first half, as the Cardinals were stymied from adding to the lead by ULM goalkeeper Brooke-Lynn Scroggins, who made a couple of spectacular saves.

The Cardinals solved Scroggins twice in the early going of the second half. Peskin made it 2-0 just 8:33 into the second half after freshman Lucy Ashworth stole the ball from a ULM defender and fed Peskin all alone in front of Scroggins. Juliana Ocampo made it 3-0 a little more than four minutes later off a feed from M.J. Eckart.

The Warhawks got their only goal of the game at the 66:33 mark when Rahel Zerazion beat LU goalkeeper Rachel Gries on a breakaway after being set up by Danielle Sabathe.

LU put the game away with three late goals. Jordan Mulnix scored at the 74:50 mark off an assist from Rubi Villegas to make it 4-1. Peskin scored 35 seconds later as Ashworth picked up her second assist. Peskin notched her fourth of the game to close out the scoring with 9:49 remaining when her header beat ULM goalkeeper Audrey Pendergraft. Tori Alaniz picked up the assist.

"It's nice to get the win, but we have to keep things in perspective; it's just an exhibition game," Holeman said. "I saw some good things, but I saw some things we need to clean up."

Senior goalkeeper Lauren Lovejoy played the first half for the Cardinals, blanking the Warhawks while making one save over 45 minutes. Gries made one save in the second half for LU.

Scroggins played the first 63:25 in goal for ULM, allowing three goals while making nine saves. Pendergraft played the final 26:35 in goal for ULM, making four saves and allowing three goals.

The Cardinals start the regular season with a three-game homestand. The game vs. Southern is set for 7 p.m. Friday. Louisiana comes to the LU Soccer Complex at 6 p.m. Aug. 20. The homestand wraps up when the Cardinals host Southern Miss at 7 p.m. Aug. 25.
