BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University junior Tomar Thomas was named the Southland Conference's offensive player of the week for women's volleyball, the SLC office announced Monday.
 
The outside hitter/middle blocker had 49 kills over two matches, including a career-high 25 kills in a five-set win at Southeastern Louisiana. For the week, Thomas averaged 5.44 kills per set with a .362 hitting percentage on the week as the Cardinals went 1-1.
 
"Tomar's award is well deserved," LU coach Alan Edwards said. "She was tremendous in both matches. She keeps learning and keeps getting better."
 
The Cardinals close out the home portion of the 2017 schedule by hosting Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald Gym.
 
LU (4-18 overall, 2-10 Southland) is in a must-win situation if it hopes to keep its chances for a bid in next month's Southland Conference Tournament alive. The Cardinals are 2.5 games behind Abilene Christian (5-6 SLC) for the final tournament berth with four matches remaining. Incarnate Word (5-14, 4-8) is also fighting to keep its tournament hopes alive.
 
Thomas leads the Cardinals with 231 kills, including 179 in conference. Murielle Hlavac leads LU with 210 digs.
 
Autumn Lockley leads UIW with 210 kills.
 
Tuesday's contest is the second meeting of the season between the squads. UIW won the earlier battle of the Cardinals, sweeping LU 25-17, 25-20, 25-11 at UIW on Oct. 14.
 
Tuesday's match is Senior Night, with LU playing tribute to Amy Hollowell and Haley Morton, who will be playing their final home match. In addition, all fans attending the Halloween night match will receive free candy.

Following Tuesday's match, the Cardinals end the regular season with three straight away contests.
