NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Junior goalkeeper
Lauren Lovejoy made eight saves in her first start of the season, but it wasn't enough for the Lamar University Cardinals in a 1-0 loss to the host Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks in a Southland Conferenced women's soccer game Friday night.
The Cardinals (1-10-1 overall, 0-3-1 Southland) were shut out for the eighth time this season and on the road for the fourth straight game.
"It's frustrating. The effort is there, but we have to turn all of this effort into a win at some point," LU coach
Steve Holeman said. "It's the same old story, we played well, but we have a lapse and the ball ends up in the back of our net."
Stephen F. Austin (7-2-0, 4-0-0) got all the offense it needed when Amanda Doyle converted a feed from Hanna Barker for her third goal of the season just 3:51 into the second half.
We let somebody slip behind us and it cost us," Holeman said. "We came back and created some chances, but we have to find a way to finish those chances."
The injury-depleted Cardinals used just 13 players in the game, but Holeman is not willing to use that as an excuse.
"All of those players who have played all those minutes should be in great shape by now," Holeman said. "We just have to go out there and find a way to win."
Lillie Ehlert made one save to pick up the shutout for the Ladyjacks, the defending regular-season champions, who are tied for first with Central Arkansas.
The Cardinals go for their first conference win of the season when they play at Sam Houston State (1-10-1, 1-2-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Bearkats suffered a 1-0 loss to visiting McNeese on Friday night.
"We'll practice at Sam Houston State on Saturday to get ready for the game," Holeman said. "It's a game we need to win if we hope to make the conference tournament."
The Cardinals return home to host Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m. Friday at the LU Soccer Complex.
