BATON ROUGE, La. – The Lamar University women's soccer team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 4-0 loss at SEC power LSU on Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals (1-7-1), who opened Southland Conference play with a scoreless tie at Nicholls on Friday, were meeting an SEC squad for the first time in the 10-year history of the LU soccer program.
"We play teams like this to prepare us for conference play," LU coach
Steve Holeman said. "LSU is at a different level of speed and athleticism. We were able to work on things that we can't replicate in practice. This will definitely make us a better team."
The Tigers (6-4-0) were led by Jorian Baucom, who capped off a strong weekend with a three-goal effort. Baucom, who had two goals in LSU's 3-0 win over Ole Miss on Friday, now has nine goals on the season.
"We knew she was a tremendous player," Holeman said. "She's a very dangerous player."
The shorthanded Cardinals, who played a 110-minute game against Nicholls on Friday, were forced to scramble at the last minute, when starting midfielder
Juliana Ocampo was a last-minute scratch, leaving LU with just three healthy field players as substitutes. Freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Schoeb was pressed into service as a field player in the last five minutes of the game.
"That was tough because of the heat and humidity today," Holeman said after the game. "Fortunately, some of our injured players should be ready to return next weekend."
Delaney Sheehan had LSU's other goal and added an assist for the Tigers.
Rachel Gries started in goal for LU, allowing three goals in 54:07 of action before giving way to
Lauren Lovejoy, who surrendered one goal over the final 35:53. LSU had a 31-1 advantage in shots and a 17-1 edge in corner kicks.
Caroline Brockmeier picked up the shutout for LSU.
Laura Parra had LU's shot.
The Cardinals return home for a pair of Southland Conference games next weekend, hosting Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Friday and Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. Sunday. Friday is Military Appreciation Night, with all active and retired military personnel receiving free admission with a valid ID. Sunday is Youth Soccer Day, with all youth soccer players admitted for free when they wear their team jersey.
