USD sweeps Lamar at Hawkeye Invite

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Lamar University volleyball team fell 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 5-25) in its lone match of the Hawkeye Invitational Saturday, against South Dakota at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It was the final match of non-conference action for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals (0-12) got out to a slow start, and for the second time in three matches finished with a negative hitting percentage – both were against South Dakota (11-1). LU finished the match with 16 total kills and 23 errors in 85 total attacks.

It was the first time this season that Lamar University was able to match up with an opponent that it faced early in the season.

For the first time in 11 matches, a Cardinal not named Chelsea Grant was able to top the team in kills. Ivette Dim, Murielle Hlavac and Carlyn Stella all led Lamar with three kills apiece.  Both Grant and Tomar Thomas had two each, and Amy Hollowell, Haley Morton and Kelly Crow all had one.

The Coyotes were able to impose their will for a .329 hitting percentage, and Audrey Reeg led the way with 13 kills and only two errors. As a team, USD had 40 kills and 12 errors.

Lamar University will open Southland Conference action Thursday at 7 p.m. at Southeastern Louisiana, followed by a 2 p.m. start at New Orleans Saturday. LU's first home match is quickly approaching and is slated to be at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 against Central Arkansas.
