NORMAN, Okla. –
Chelsea Grant topped the match with 15 kills on just 29 attacks, and led the Cardinals in a tough battle against Oklahoma, which was receiving votes in the latest coaches polls, when they fell 3-0 (20-25, 21-25, 16-25) to the Sooners in the final match of the Nike Invitational at McCasland Field House.
Grant finished that match with a .414 attack percentage, short of her season high of .467 that was notched Friday's final match versus UTSA. She only recorded three errors in the match and chimed in two blocks.
The Killeen native powered down seven kills in 12 attempts in the first set. The Cardinals were able to cut a lead in that set down to 19-17 when Grant put one on the ground on an assist from
Haley Morton. Two straight Sooner points made it 21-17, and
Ivette Dim cut it to 21-18 with a kill. From there, OU outlasted LU with a 4-3 run to win the game.
For the first set, Lamar put up a .289 attack percentage – it's highest of the game - with 16 kills and five errors. The Sooners posted a .400 mark with 15 kills and only three errors.
In the second set, both teams were tied at 11-11 when
Kelly Crow issued an ace to OU's Kimmy Gardiner – her second straight reception error – to make it 12-11. From there, OU scored four straight to grab a 15-12 lead, in which it would not give up.
Both teams battled back-and-forth, and LU fell down two points, 22-20. Kills from Kimmy Gardinerand Alyssa Enneking pushed it to 24-21 and an attack error ended the set to give the Sooners a 2-0 match advantage.
Murielle Hlavac helped Grant in carrying the Cardinals, adding 12 kills on the day. The two combined for 27 of LU's 37 kills. Dim added five and
Tomar Thomas chimed in with four.
Haley Morton recorded her second-straight 30-plus assist game with 31.
Lauren Stahlman led the way with eight of the Cardinals' 25 digs, she was followed by Crow's five.
LU earned 45 points in the match, 15 a set, with a .192 attack percentage as a team. It served up two aces – both Crow's – and added in six blocks. Oklahoma finished the match with 59 points earned, 19.6 a set, and had a .363 attack percentage.
The Cardinals only took one reception error in the match.
Lamar wraps its non-conference season at the Hawkeye Invitational, where it will face Iowa and South Dakota. The first match of that event for the Cardinals will be at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.
