TCU pulls away from Cardinals

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University Cardinals hung tough with the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs for one half before eventually dropping a 6-0 decision in a non-conference women's soccer game Sunday.

LU (0-4-0) trailed just 1-0 at intermission before TCU (3-0-0) erupted for five second-half goals to put the game away.

"I saw a lot of positives in the first half, but TCU came out and played a strong second half," LU coach Steve Holeman. "They are a different level than us, but playing teams like this will definitely make us better."

TCU took a 1-0 lead at the 12:42 mark of the first half as Michelle Prokof headed in a pass from Emma Heckendorn. That would be the only scoring of the first half, a session that saw a lightning delay of 100 minutes with 8:23 remaining in the first half. The extended break resulted in just a five-minute intermission instead of the usual 15 minutes, and the Horned Frogs made the most of those five minutes as well as the 1-hour, 40-minute delay.

"They handled the delay better than we did," Holeman said. "They're a good team and we saw some things we need to work on. They have some great speed and took advantage of that."

Prokof and Faith Carter each had two goals for TCU, Heckendorn finished with a goal and two assists, while Allison Ganter had a goal and an assist. Courtney Hofer and Katie Lund each played one half in the shutout, with Hofer picking up the win. Rachel Gries made 10 saves for LU.

TCU outshot the Cardinals 26-4, holding a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal. Marie Lund had two shots and the only shot on goal for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals hit the road for five straight games before returning home to host Northwestern State in a Southland Conference match at 7 p.m. Sept. 23.

"I think going on the road where we can focus on soccer and avoid some other distractions will help," Holeman said. "I think it will help this team bond."
