Rodriguez extends hit streak as LU drops 2

TULSA, Okla. – Brittany Rodriguez extended her hitting streak to 14 games to tie a Lamar University record, but the LU softball team dropped both of its games Sunday at the Tulsa Invitational.

Rodriguez, who transferred to LU this year from Galveston College, went 2-for-4 in LU's 14-8 loss to Iowa before going 1-for-2 in a 9-0 loss to Tulsa as the Cardinals (10-8) saw their skid reach six straight games. Rodriguez leads LU with a .431 batting average.

"Brittany has been tremendous so far this season," LU coach Holly Bruder said. "She's fit right in."

LU led Iowa (6-13) 8-5 after five innings only to see the Hawkeyes tie the game with three runs in the sixth inning before breaking the game open with six runs in the top of the seventh. Angela Schmiederer's grand slam in the seventh broke the 8-8 deadlock.

Ashley McDowell had three RBIs for LU, while Stephanie Meeuwsen crossed the plate twice to become the first LU player to score 100 runs in a career.

Against Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane scored once in the first and once in the second before erupting with seven runs in the bottom of the third. Tulsa (15-4) outhit LU 10-4 in a game that was called after the top of the fifth due to the run rule.

"Tulsa is a very good team, but we should have beaten Iowa," Bruder said. "It was a tough weekend. We are going to gather up our notes and we have to sharpen all of our tools."

The Cardinals continue their stretch of 16 straight games away from the LU Softball Complex when they travel to Houston Baptist to open conference play on Friday. The Cardinals and Huskies are slated to play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday and a single game at noon Saturday. LU's next home game is not until March 25, when Incarnate Word comes to town to open a three-game SLC series.
