Hankins powers sweep of Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. – Sable Hankins tied a Lamar University single-game record with seven RBIs as she powered the Cardinals to a doubleheader sweep of host Jackson state in non-conference softball action on Wednesday.

Hankins went 4-for-5 with a home run while driving in seven runs in the nightcap, a 16-7 LU victory. The Cardinals (14-9) claimed an 11-7 win in the opener.

"Sable was incredible in the second game," LU coach Holly Bruder said. "Any time you can drive in that many runs in a game is something special."

Hankins was a triple shy of the cycle in the nightcap, collecting two singles, a double and her team-leading fourth home run of the year. She tied the single-game RBI mark set by Jenna Holland in 2013.

The Cardinals rapped out 26 hits on the day, getting an even dozen hits in the opener and 14 in the second game. The 16 runs are a season high for LU, which has won four in a row.

"I'm pleased with today," Bruder said. "We tried out a few people in some spots, and I was happy with what I saw."

LU's Brittany Rodriguez had hits in both contests as she extended her school-record hitting streak to 19 games. Freshman Kelly Meeuwsen hit her first home run of the season, depositing the second pitch of the first game over the wall in straight-away center field.

Starter Laura Napoli (4-4) got the win in the opener, allowing four hits and two unearned runs over five innings of work. Lauren Dannelley allowed two hits and five runs, one earned, in two innings of relief. Stephanie Meeuwsen had four RBIs in the opening contest for LU.

In the nightcap, sophomore right-hander started and picked up her first career win. Cisneros (1-0) overcame a rough start, allowing three runs in the first inning. Cisneros worked four innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Freshman Julia Voluntad worked the final three innings for her second save, tying an LU single-season mark. Voluntad allowed three hits and two runs, both unearned, in her three innings.

Sarah Ragsdale had three RBIs for LU in the second game, while Ashley McDowell drove in a pair of runs. Sarah Gore had a two-run home run for Jackson State (2-13).

The Cardinals will practice in Jackson on Thursday before heading to Abilene Christian for a three-game Southland Conference series over the weekend. The teams will play a single game at 6 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader at noon Saturday. You can listen to the broadcasts by CLICKING HERE.
