SAN ANTONIO –
Jordan Mulnix moved into sole possession of fourth place on Lamar University's all-time scoring list as her late goal lifted the LU Cardinals into a 1-1 tie with host Incarnate Word in a Southland Conference women's soccer game Sunday.
All four meetings between LU and Incarnate Word have ended in a tie.
Mulnix scored on a penalty kick with 2:21 remaining in regulation for her 16
th career goal. The LU sophomore has now picked up points in four straight games, including a goal in each of her last two contests.
Mulnix was awarded the penalty kick after an Incarnate Word defender was whistled for a handball in the penalty area.
"I give the official a lot of credit for making that call late in the game," LU coach
Steve Holeman said. "It was clearly a handball, but I have seen instances where that call is not made late in the game."
It was the first time this season that LU (1-12-3 overall, 0-5-3 Southland) earned a point after trailing at halftime. LU had been 0-5 in such occasions this fall.
"Incarnate Word outplayed us in the first half, but I think some of that had to do with the wind that was at their backs," Holeman said. "We challenged our players at halftime, and they responded. I was very pleased with the way we played."
Incarnate Word (3-9-2, 2-5-1) took a 1-0 lead with 12:21 remaining in the opening half on Sam Bailey's third goal of the season. UIW's Alyssa Arnaya started the play, as her shot bounced off the crossbar, right to Bailey, who put it behind LU goalkeeper
Lauren Lovejoy.
That was the only blemish of the day for Lovejoy, who finished the afternoon with nine saves. Lovejoy has made 29 saves while allowing just four goals over her last three games.
The Cardinals close the regular season with three straight home games. LU hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. Friday, Houston Baptist at 1 p.m. Oct. 23, and McNeese at 7 p.m. Oct. 28. The Cardinals need to win all three games and receive some help on the out-of-town scoreboard to qualify for next month's Southland Conference Tournament.
Friday's game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will feature a Badges vs. Ladders halftime game pitting area law-enforcement officers vs. firefighters. All first responders receive free admission with valid DI. The Houston Baptist game is Campers Reunion Day, with all youngsters who attended the LU Soccer Camp this past summer receiving free admission if they wear their camp T-shirt. There will also be a postgame soccer clinic for youths.
