Cards head to Border Bash this weekend

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's soccer team opens a three-game road sojourn this weekend when it competes at the Sixth Annual Border Bash.

The Cardinals (2-2-0) face UTEP (2-2-0) in El Paso, Texas, at 8 p.m. Friday and New Mexico State (0-4-0) in Las Cruces, N.M., at 2 p.m. Sunday. LU brings a two-game winning streak into the weekend, as the Cardinals come off a solid weekend that saw them defeat Texas Southern by a 5-0 score on Aug. 28 and a 6-0 victory over LSU-Alexandria on Aug. 30.

The 11 goals over the weekend were the most in a two-game span for the Cardinals since 2012, when LU scored 12 goals in two contests thanks to a 4-0 win over Texas Southern and an 8-0 victory over Alcorn State.

LU freshman Jordan Mulnix is tied for 10th in the nation in goals with four and points with 10. Mulnix had three goals in the win over Texas Southern and followed that up with a goal and two assists against LSU-Alexandria. Mulnix's hat trick against Texas Southern was the third in program history. As a team, LU entered the week tied for 19th in the nation with 11 goals scored.

LU freshman midfielder Juliana Ocampo had two goals in the win over LSU-Alexandria, while sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Lovejoy picked up her first two career wins.

"We had a good weekend, and we want to build off of that," LU coach Orlando Cervantes said. "Our freshman class is really talented and they're getting better with each game. Lauren Lovejoy is playing really well. She is technically strong and playing with a lot of confidence."

The Cardinals are looking for their first-ever wins against both UTEP and New Mexico State. LU is 0-1 against UTEP, having dropped a 6-1 decision at UTEP on Sept. 11, 2010. LU is 0-2 against New Mexico State. The Aggies were 2-1 victors over the Cardinals back on Sept. 25, 2009, in the Cardinals' first-ever game at the LU Soccer Complex. The following season, the Aggies claimed a 4-0 home triumph over LU.

"We're not going to focus on anyone but ourselves," Cervantes said. "These will be two tough road games. Our goal is to keep moving forward and continue to get better."

Following this weekend, LU is at North Texas at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 before returning home to host Alcorn State at 1 p.m. Sept. 13.
