Softball drops two to UTSA

March 31, 2015

BEAUMONT, Texas -- The Lamar Lady Cardinals couldn't get their bats going in either game as they dropped a nonconference doubleheader to visiting UTSA by scores of 7-2 and 9-1 at the Lamar Softball Complex on Tuesday.

The Lady Cardinals (17-15) managed just six hits on the day, just one for extra bases, as they fell to 7-4 at home this season.

UTSA (26-11) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and controlled the rest of the day from there. Jenna Holland had two of Lamar's four hits in the opener, while Corina Thornton drove in both runs in the first game.

UTSA belted three home runs in the opener, as Vivian Tierjina, Randee Crawford and Madison Kinley all hit round-trippers.

Lamar starter Laura Napoli (12-8) took the loss, allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned, in five innings. Annika Seedborg surrendered one run in two innings of relief.

UTSA starter Kelsi Ott (3-0) got the win, allowing four hits and two unearned runs over four innings. Kacy Freeze pitched three innings of hitless relief for her second save.

In the second game, UTSA pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of three Lamar errors for the win.  Lauren Dannelley (5-7) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and five runs, two earned, in 4 2/3 innings. Seedborg gave up six hits and four runs, all earned in 2 1/3 innings.

UTSA starter Nicole Merrill (7-5) got the win, allowing two hits and one unearned run over four innings. Chelsea Parker and Lizzy Fox combined for three hitless innings of relief in the nightcap.

Holland and Stephanie Meeuwsen had Lamar's only hits.

Lamar's Shannon Sain went hitless in both games as she saw her school-record streak of reaching base safely end at 23 games.

Lamar returns to action with a three-game Southland Conference series at Southeastern Louisiana this weekend. Lamar is 10-2 in the conference, a half-game ahead of the Lions for fourth place. The teams play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday and a single game at noon Saturday. Friday's games will be aired live on www.LamarCardinals.com.

Lamar's returns home to host Alcorn State in a nonconference doubleheader at 2 p.m. April 8.
