March 1, 2015AUSTIN, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals completed one of the most successful weekends in program history with a 6-1 win over Texas Southern in the final game of the Texas Invitational on Sunday.

Lauren Dannelley tossed a two-hitter as Lamar (7-9) went 4-1 on the weekend, including a 9-1 victory over 25th-ranked Texas on Saturday.

"This was a great way to head into our conference schedule," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "All elements of our game were on this weekend."

The Lady Cardinals had eight hits on Sunday, and hit .339 for the weekend, led by Jenna Holland, who finished 7-for-14 with three doubles, a home run and nine RBIs for the five games.

Casey Cromwell and Stephanie Meeuwsen had two hits apiece for Lamar on Sunday, while Corina Thornton added a two-run triple.

Brianna Parker and Danya Rogers each had a hit for Texas Southern (3-10).

Cromwell and Meeuwsen each hit .438 for the weekend, while Thornton had a .417 batting average.

The pitching staff enjoyed a fine weekend as well. Dannelley went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA, while Laura Napoli, who tossed a one-hitter in the win over Texas, was 2-1 with a 1.75 ERA.

Meeuwsen led the defense, handling 26 chances without an error at shortstop. As a team, the Lady Cardinals made just six errors, posting a .959 fielding percentage. By comparison, Lamar's opponents committed 14 errors, compiling a .908 fielding percentage.

Lamar and Texas each went 4-1 at the invitational to share the top record for the weekend. There were no tournament awards presented.

The Lady Cardinals, who opened the season with 16 straight games away from home, open their home schedule when they host Houston Baptist in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday at the brand-new Lamar Softball Complex.
