BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University volleyball team fell to Southeastern Louisiana 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-18) Saturday afternoon in the final road contest for the Cardinals, who were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss, at the University Center in Southland Conference action.
With the loss, LU fell to 13-15 on the season and 3-11 in league play, three games behind Lions (12-16, 6-8), who hold the eighth and final spot for the Southland Conference Tournament, with just two games to play in the season.
The Cardinals had only eight kills a set in the match and accounted for five errors a game. As a team, they hit for a .115 hitting percentage, fourth lowest of the season, with 26 total kills and 15 errors in the contest. Southeastern Louisiana had a .330 hitting percentage with 44 kills (14.7 per set) and 15 errors (5.0) in the match.
Cortney Moore led Lamar for the second-straight match in kills with six, followed by
Chelsea Grant's five. Each had only one error, and Moore had 23 swings (.217) and Grant had 13 (.308).
Autumn Taylor had a .167 attack percentage with four kills in the match, and Caryln Stella followed with three along with
Amy Hollowell.
Southeastern's Landry Bullock led all players with 15 kills in the match, and she was followed by Sarah Friedman's 10 and Parrie Hartley's seven. Friedman had 19 swings in the match with a .421 hitting percentage, only behind .571 from Mikayla Shippy (four kills).
Haley Morton led Lamar with 15 of its 26 assists,
Ashley Ellis had nine. Freshman
Erin Pequeno finished the match with a team-high eight digs, followed by three from
Autumn Taylor and Ellis.
In the service game, Lamar accounted for five reception errors, but only two service errors itself. The Cardinals also had six service errors.
LU returns to McDonald Gym on Thursday against Houston Baptist, and the season finale will be on Saturday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Saturday's match will be Senior Day for the Cards, who honor senior Moore and
Jenna Jackson.
