Cardinals head to Utah on Tuesday

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball team for its first-ever meeting with the Utah Utes when the teams clash in a non-conference game at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Huntsman Center on the University of Utah campus.

The Cardinals (0-1) look to bounce back from a season-opening loss at perennial national power Oklahoma State on Friday. Utah (1-0), a member of the Pac-12, opened its season with a 66-59 win over visiting South Dakota on Friday. Emily Potter had a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Utes.

Following Tuesday's game at Utah, the Cardinals open the home portion of their 2015-16 schedule by hosting Louisiana College at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Montagne Center.

"We have to learn from our loss to Oklahoma State and move on," LU coach Robin Harmony said. "I saw some good things, but there are plenty of things we have to work on. We know that games against teams from the power conferences will get us ready for Southland Conference games."

The Cardinals, who have the top-ranked recruiting class in the Southland Conference according to All Star Girls Report, started three freshmen against Oklahoma State, with one, Chastadie Barrs, leading LU with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals.

"I thought our freshmen played well," Harmony said. "We need our upperclassmen to step up."

LU senior JaMeisha Edwards enters Tuesday's game with 131 career 3-pointers, tied with Danyelle Grimes for fourth place o LU's all-time list.

Louisiana College opened its season with an 85-42 loss at Louisiana-Monroe on Friday. The Lady Wildcats, a Division III program consider the game against ULM as well as Thursday's game at LU as exhibition contests.

"We're looking forward to playing at home," Harmony said. "We're excited to play in front of our fans."
