BEAUMONT, Texas -- The Lamar University volleyball team wraps up its 2015 Southland Conference campaign with two matches on the week, the first against Houston Baptist Thursday at 7 o'clock and the finale Saturday against newly crowned Southland Conference champions Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 o'clock. Both are at McDonald Gym and are in Southland Conference play.
Â
Fans who bring two can goods to Thursday's match for LU's can food drive will receive $2 off of an adult ticket, and Saturday's match has been tabbed as Senior Day, in which the Cardinals (13-15, 3-11 Southland Conference) will honor its seniors
Cortney Moore and
Jenna Jackson in pregame festivities.
Â
Houston Baptist (15-15, 7-7) has already clinched a spot in the Southland Conference tournament, but is now fighting for the fourth-eight seeds left to claim. The Islanders (26-4, 14-0) locked up the top seed with a win over Central Arkansas in their last outing.
Â
Lamar has faced both teams already this season, both road losses for Big Red.
Â
Against HBU, the Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the time the teams went to intermission, but the Cardinals made a game of it taking the next two sets and pushing the fifth set until it fell 21-19. Moore tied HBU's top offensive player Jessica Wooten for the match lead of 19 kills.
Carlyn Stella and
Murielle Hlavac each had a career-best in kills, 15 and 12 respectively.
Â
Wooten averages 3.27 kills a set and has a .197 hitting percentage in 107 sets played. She is also second on the team in digs per set, 2.74, behind Melissa Fuchs' 3.22 mark. Five Huskies have digs marks over two a set so far this season.
Â
Their lone senior Allison Doerpinghaus has a team-best 1.08 blocks a set mark, and is third on the team with a 1.89 kills mark.
Â
Moore also led the Cards in kills during the A&M-Corpus Christi match, which ended with the Islanders winning in straight sets. The senior finished 11 kills, only behind AMCC's Ivy Baresh's 13, which was the match high.
Â
Baresh leads the Islanders with a 3.30 kills per set average, ahead of Kelsee Felux (2.74), Brittany Gilpin (2.55) and Morgan Carlson (2.52), who all average above two kills a game. Kate Klepetka is the league's leader with 6.04 digs per set and Baresh follows her at 3.18.
Â
Moore is the Cardinals' offensive leader at 2.80 kills a set, just ahead of
Chelsea Grant's 2.72 mark, and
Autumn Taylor has an average of 2.27.
Haley Morton, who is the team's leader in assists (6.54 apg), is third in digs per set behind 3.86 per game from
Lauren Stahlman and 2.40 from freshman
Erin Pequeno.
Â
Grant leads LU and is third in the league with 1.23 blocks a contest.Â
