BEAUMONT – Both
Chelsea Grant and
Cortney Moore had kills in the double-digits Thursday night, but Northwestern State had a potent attack from several places that led the Demons to take down the Cardinals 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) in Southland Conference action at McDonald Gym.
Both Moore and Grant had plus-.300 hitting percentages, Moore at .393 and Grant at .381. Lamar fell to 13-9 on the season and 3-5 in league play while NSU improved to 6-18 overall and 4-7 in Southland action.
Northwestern State had both of its middle blockers, Glynna Johnson and Amanda Kunz, at nine kills apiece, and Lauren Agan led the way with 10. Kunz had a .450 hitting percentage and no errors, while Johnson had a .333 mark and Agan a .267 percentage.
A run in the first set gave the Demons some momentum that they were able to use and controlled for most of the match. LU was only down 7-6, but NSU was able to work itself out to a 21-12 advantage when the Cardinals served up a service error. During the run, the Demons accounted for eight kills while Big Red gave up six points on errors.
Despite never having the lead in the second set, Lamar fought and tied it eight times, the first at 5-5 after NSU jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open. The final tie of the game was at 22-22, but a three point run that had two Demon kills and one LU error sealed it to give the visitors a 2-0 match lead.
The final set saw NSU up 4-1 again, but the Cardinals worked through it to gain a 13-12 lead midway through the game; that lead was after Demon setter Natalie Jaeger was called for a ball-handling error that forced the Demons to call a timeout. The point capped off a three point run for LU.
The teams were back-and-forth until NSU broke a 16-16 tie and ran away with it for a 25-20 match win.
