BEAUMONT, Texas – Freshman
Jordan Mulnix moved closer to setting the Lamar University women's soccer record for goals in a season, but her efforts weren't enough in a 6-2 loss to visiting Abilene Christian in a Southland Conference game at the LU Soccer Complex on Friday night.
Mulnix scored two goals Friday, giving her 11 on the season, one shy of
Kimmy Albeno's record of 12 set in 2012, but the Cardinals (6-10-0 Southland overall, 2-5-0 Southland) dropped its fifth straight game. The Cardinals sit three points out of a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament with four games remaining.
The loss spoiled Senior Night for the Cardinals, who honored
Morgan Burden,
Megan Campbell,
Jannet Hernandez and
Mari Olastuen before the game. The four LU seniors will play their final home game Sunday when the Cardinals host Incarnate Word at 1 p.m. Sunday.
"Jordan had a great game for us," LU coach
Orlando Cervantes said. "Unfortunately, we didn't do enough to get a win. We know we have our work cut out for us, but our remaining games are winnable."
Mulnix gave LU a 1-0 lead 12:38 into the game when she took a pass from
Juliana Ocampo and rifled a shot past Abilene Christian goalkeeper Sydney Newton.
Abilene Christian (6-7-2, 5-1-1) got on the board with a pair of goals 2:09 apart in the latter portion of the first half. Chloe Fifer tied the game with 10:08 remaining in the opening half when she deposited a rebound past LU goalkeeper
Lauren Lovejoy. Kate Seay's original shot clanged off the crossbar and right to Fifer, who slammed the ball into the LU goal. The Wildcats took the lead at 37:01 mark when Caity Acosta scored an unassisted tally.
Sophie Standler and Lindsey Jones gave Abilene Christian a 4-1 lead in the second half before Mulnix notched her second goal of the game, as she cashed in her own rebound after being stopped by Newton on the first shot with 8:23 left.
ACU sealed the win with a pair of goals in the final five minutes. The Wildcats made it 5-2 with an own goals with 4:25 remaining before Seay scored with 24 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.
"We played well early, but we had trouble responding once they took the lead," Cervantes said. We have to put this behind us and get ready for Sunday.
Lovejoy made a career-high 16 saves for the Cardinals, who tied a school record by scoring their 41
st goal of the season. The 2012 Cardinals, who advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament finals, also scored 41 goals.
"It's disappointing," Cervantes said of the loss. "But I know we have the talent to win our upcoming games."
