Aug. 24, 2014SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A pair of late goals proved to be the difference as the Lamar Lady Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision at Cal Poly in a non-conference women's soccer game Sunday afternoon.
Lamar (1-1) jumped into the lead 11:05 into the second half when Kimmy Albeno converted a pass from Jannet Hernandez. It was Albeno's first of the season and 26th of her career as she extended her school record.
Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot kept the score at 1-0 minutes later when she stoned Elise Krieghoff on a penalty kick. The score stayed at 1-0 until Cal Poly's Kendra Bonsall evened things at 1 with 11:16 remaining in regulation.
Krieghoff got revenge for her missed penalty kick when she scored the game-winner with 7:00 remaining. Krieghoff took a pass from Megan Abutin and beat Fontenot from about 20 feet to give the Mustangs (1-1) a 2-1 lead.
“I thought we played well,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “They took advantage of some opportunities late in the game, but I was very happy with our performance.”
Fontenot made three saves for Lamar.
The Lady Cardinals return to Beaumont to open a five-game homestand when they meet Rice at 7 p.m. Friday at the Lamar Soccer Complex.
