LAFAYETTE, La. - Ashley McDowell's three-run homer was the highlight for the Lamar Lady Cardinals in a 14-3 loss to No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette in a non-conference softball game Thursday night.
McDowell had two of the four hits Lamar (3-9) generated on the night. Candyce Carter and Jenna Holland had one hit apiece for Lamar.
Lamar starter Tina Schulz (2-4) took the loss, allowing seven hits and five runs, all earned, in 1 1/3 innings.
Lexie Elkins had a grand slam for the Ragin' Cajuns (15-5-1). Christina Hamilton (6-1) was credited with the win, allowing no hits over 4 2/3 innings before giving way to Jordan Wallace, who gave up four hits and three runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Lamar returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Southeastern Louisiana in a doubleheader at Ford Park that serves as the home opener and Southland Conference opener for the Lady Cardinals. The first 200 fans receive a free Lamar softball roster T-shirt. There will be a postgame autograph session. Lamar hosts Southeastern Louisiana in a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday. All senior citizens 55 and older receive free admission.
Lamar's doubleheader against Incarnate Word that was scheduled for March 12 has been canceled and will not be made up. The Lady Cardinals will play a non-conference doubleheader at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. on March 13.
