Softball swept by Sam Houston State

March 29, 2014

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Lamar Lady Cardinals received strong pitching performances from Tina Schulz and Shannon Millman, but dropped both ends of a Southland Conference doubleheader at Sam Houston State on Saturday, falling by scores of 1-0 and 3-2.

Schulz (5-6) threw a two-hitter in the opener, but Sam Houston State pushed across the only run of the game in the sixth inning without the benefit of a hit. The Bearkats took advantage of the only walk issued by Schulz, using a fielder's choice, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly by Cecilia Castillo to take the lead.

Sam Houston State starter Shelby Lancaster (4-5) scattered five hits to get the win. Lamar stranded five runners in the game.

In the nightcap, Sam Houston State again used a sixth-inning sacrifice fly to score the game-winning run. This time, it was Sarah Allison driving home the winning run, as Shannon Millman (6-7) suffered the loss.

Meme Quinn (4-3) got the win, allowing five hits and two runs over 6 13 innings. Haley Baros registered the final two outs for her third save.

"Our pitching was tremendous today," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "Our hitting didn't come through."

Candyce Carter had two hits, including an RBI double for Lamar (12-13 overall, 7-3 Southland). Shannon Sain added an RBI single for the Lady Cardinals.

Tiffany Castillo homered for Sam Houston State (17-17, 6-5).

"We made a couple of mistakes on the bases and they came back to hurt us," Bruder said. "When you play a good team like Sam Houston, you have to take advantage of your opportunities. We didn't do that."

Lamar attempts to salvage the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday. That game will air live at www.LamarCardinals.com.
