ABILENE, Texas – The Lamar Lady Cardinals saw their postseason hopes take a major hit Friday afternoon as they dropped a 2-0 decision at Abilene Christian in a Southland Conference women's soccer game.
Â
Lamar (4-11-1 overall, 2-6-1 Southland) needs to win its remaining two games and look the out-of-town scoreboard for favorable results in order to get into next month's Southland Conference Tournament.
Â
Friday's loss was the fourth straight for the Lady Cardinals, all by the way of shutout. Lamar's current scoreless streak is 417 minutes, 2 seconds.
Â
“We had our chances, but we just couldn't score again,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We dominated play in the first half, and then let them score against the flow of play late in the half.”
Â
Abilene Christian (8-8-2, 5-3-2) scored with 1:45 remaining in the opening period when Natalie Throneberry scored on a header. Leslie Snider made it 2-0 when she beat Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot just inside the near post 10:44 into the second half.
Â
Fontenot made eight saves for Lamar, giving her 319 for her career, just seven behind Jennifer Gibbs for the all-time Lamar record. Kristin Bos appeared in her 75th game, tying the Lamar record set by Lisa Topping.
Â
Kelsey Dombrowski made five saves for Abilene Christian.
Â
Lamar returns to action at noon Sunday at Incarnate Word before closing out the regular season at 7 p.m. Oct. 31 by hosting Central Arkansas.
