COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Beverly Corry's eighth home run of the season tied Candyce Carter for the Lamar single-season record, but the Lady Cardinals dropped a non-conference softball doubleheader to 10th-ranked Texas A&M by scores of 9-0 and 12-4 on Tuesday.
Carter's two-run shot was one of three home runs hit by the Lady Cardinals (18-25) in the second game. Ashley McDowell and Tina Schulz added solo homers for Lamar
“We lost to a better team today,” Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. “These mid-week games are meant to help us when it comes to conference games. I thought we did some good things today.”
Texas A&M (33-7) hit five home runs on the day as the Aggies improved to 19-0 in non-conference home games this season. Cali Lanphear homered in each game for Texas A&M.
Schulz (4-10) started and took the loss in the opener, allowing eight hits and seven runs over two earnings. Starter Melissa Smith (1-5) took the loss in the nightcap, along five hits and six runs in one-plus innings.
“It's tough to come back against a good team like that,” Bruder said. They have a tremendous amount of talent. It seems everyone can hit.”
Lamar returns to action this weekend when it hosts Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game Southland Conference series at Ford Park. The teams meet in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
“This weekend is huge,” said Bruder, whose Lady Cardinals are tied for third place. “We have to come out and play like we want it,”
