Final Stats

BEAUMONT – Sierra Whittaker had 15 kills and Wendy Krell added 12, but it was not enough for the Lamar volleyball team as they fell 3-1 (21-25, 20-25, 29-27, 21-25) to visiting Stephen F. Austin at McDonald Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Krell was efficient on the attack for the Lady Cards, hitting .400. Cortney Moore and Tiffany Hunnicutt were also key to the LU offense as the duo combined for 17 kills.

Alex Morford was responsible for directing the offense for much of the day, totaling 38 assists.

Defensively, Megan Schwartz led the way with a match-high 16 digs, and Erika Rojas had 13. Kensey Camp had 12.

The Lady Cards (9-9, 1-3 SLC) got off to a strong start in the opening set, running out to a 4-0 lead, but the Ladyjacks methodically worked their way back into the match, eventually taking the lead on a Paige Holland kill at 17-16. After LU fought back to tie it on a Krell kill at 19-19, but SFA responded with six of the ensuing eight points to grab the 25-21.

The second frame featured 14 ties and two lead changes, but another late run doomed the Lady Cards on the way to a 25-20 loss. After LU came back to tie at 18-18, three straight SFA points were all the Ladyjacks needed as they went into the break with a 2-0 advantage.

The Lady Cards came out strong, running out to an early 7-1 lead in the third. LU would maintain the advantage out to 18-12, but Lamar responded with six straight points to tie it up. It would go back and forth over the next few minutes, eventually setting up the first LU set point opportunity at 24-23 on a Krell kill. SFA picked up two straight points to force a set point of their own, but Krell answered once again to tie it up at 25-25. After two more set point chances, a Moore kill and Katzy Randall attack error gave the Lady Cards the 29-27 victory.

The Ladyjacks took their first lead in the fourth at 7-6, and despite some challenges from the Lady Cards over the course of the frame, SFA wouldn’t look back as they went on to win 25-21 to improve to 13-3 and 4-0 in conference play.
