Lamar football adds pair of Oklahoma State transfers

June 5, 2012

BEAUMONT -Wide receiver Kevin Johnson and defensive lineman Joe Okafor have both transferred to Lamar University from Oklahoma State, announced LU head football coach Ray Woodard on Tuesday.

Both players will be classified as redshirt sophomores and are eligible to play in the upcoming 2012 season.

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Johnson played mostly on special teams in 2011 for the Cowboys to earn a varsity letter. He finished the OSU spring game with three catches for 95 yards and a touchdown in April.

A standout at Houston's Cypress Ridge High School, Johnson was ranked as the No. 63 overall player in Texas and the 54th best receiver in the nation by Rivals as a senior when he earned District 15-5A MVP honors. As a senior, he rushed for 485 yards, picked up 412 receiving yards and was an all-district kick returner. Johnson added 690 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior.

Okafor is a 6-foot-6, 295-pound defensive lineman who prepped at Bellaire (Texas) High School. During his redshirt freshman season, Okafor appeared in two games and recorded a tackle against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Okafor was ranked as the No. 57 defensive end in the country by Rivals, and Texas Football listed him as one of the top 25 defensive linemen in the state. He was a second-team All-District 20-5A selection as a senior and played three years of varsity basketball.
