Loyd's double-double not enough for Lady Cards

Feb. 25, 2012

BEAUMONT, Texas - Kalis Loyd moved into fourth place on Lamar's all-time scoring list, but the LU women's basketball team dropped a 72-59 decision to visiting Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference game Saturday night.

Loyd's 19 points boosted her career total to 1,377 points, passing Barbara Hickey's 1,370 points and Travesa Gant's 1,372 points on the Lamar chart. Loyd also pulled down 11 rebounds for her team-leading fourth double-double of the season and the 18th of her career.

Jasmin Henderson added 10 points for Lamar (15-13 overall, 7-7 Southland) on her 21st birthday, but the Lady Cardinals couldn't overcome a cold-shooting night. Lamar was 21-of-66 (31.8 percent) from the field, including a 4-of-21 effort (19 percent) from 3-point range. Sam Houston State (15-10, 10-4) outrebounded Lamar 50-36.

"It's very disappointing to lose at home," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "We have a lot of things we have to work on."

Britni Martin led Sam Houston with 22 points, while Sequeena Thomas had a double-double, finioshing with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Chanice Smith added 10 points for the Bearkats.

Lamar, which has already locked up a berth in next month's Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, Texas, hosts Texas State at 7 p.m. Wednesday before closing out the regular season by hosting McNeese State at 1 p.m. March 3.
