BEAUMONT - Cortney Moore totaled nine kills, three aces and four blocks on Thursday night, but the Lamar volleyball team couldn't take advantage of the freshman's outing as the Lady Cardinals fell 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 17-25, 16-25) to the visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at McDonald Gym.
"I think Cortney is doing some phenomenal things out there, especially as a freshman," head coach Justin Gibert said. "She blocked really well, and she was a presence at the net. Offensively, when we could get the ball to her, she put it away. We just weren't able to get the ball to her enough."
Moore was the only Lady Card to put up double-digit points as Madi Martin and Wendy Krell tied for second on the team with six kills. Sierra Whittaker added five.
Martin, who was tasked with taking the reins of the LU offense in Alex Morford's absence, posted 27 assists, and the Lady Cards were out-hit by the Islanders .268 to .122.
Defensively, Whittaker, Martin and Schwartz tied for the team lead in digs with seven apiece.
After dropping 10 consecutive sets coming into Thursday's match, the Lady Cards weathered a ferocious rally by TAMUCC towards the end of the first to secure a 26-24 victory.
LU came out impressively in the first home match in two weeks, grabbing a 21-11 lead over the Islanders, who are amid one of their best seasons in school history. However, TAMUCC began a late charge, scoring 13 of the ensuing 16 points to tie things up at 24-24, but the comeback effort was ultimately for naught as a Whittaker kill and Islander attack error handed the Lady Cards the frame.
A string of late errors came back to haunt the Lady Cards in the second set, as Islanders flipped a 16-14 deficit into a 25-21 win thanks to 10 LU errors over the final 16 points.
TAMUCC was never seriously challenged out of the intermission as the Lady Cards were out-hit .344 to .111 over the final two sets, losing 25-17 and 25-16.
Lamar will return to action on Saturday afternoon when Sam Houston State makes the trek to Beaumont. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
