Texas State hands Lamar 3-1 setback

Sept. 29, 2011

Box Score

SAN MARCOS - Lamar University's three-match volleyball winning streak came to an end Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum as Texas State was able to overcome dropping the first set and hand the Lady Cardinals a 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-20) Southland Conference defeat.

The loss is also the Lady Cardinals' first Southland loss on the season as they fall to 4-14 overall and 2-1 in league play. With the victory, Texas State snapped a two-match losing streak to Lamar, and improved to 11-6 on the year and 2-1 in conference action.

The Lady Cardinals, who will play at UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon at 2, have not won in San Marcos since 2002.

Lamar looked as though it would extend its winning streak in the first set. Trailing 22-17 in set one, LU rallied to score eight of the next nine points to win 25-23. Sophomore outside hitter Megan McStravick, who finished with eight kills, hammered home back-to-back winners to break a 23-23 tie.

However, Texas State found its offensive rhythm in winning the next three sets 26-24, 25-15 and 25-20. After hitting just .262 in the first set, the Bobcats would go on to finish the match with a .367 attack percentage and dominate Lamar in total kills 66-43.

The Lady Cardinals did a good job from the service line which has been a problem this season, but they could not overcome their offensive deficiency. Both teams finished with five service aces, but Lamar committed just two service errors while TXST finished with 16.

Only sophomore outside hitter Sierra Whittaker reached double figures in kills for Lamar with 10. However, Whittaker also committed seven attack errors and finished with a .097 attack percentage.

Junior middle blocker Christina Hobbs, who registered a career-high 21 kills against Texas State last season, had a solid match with eight kills and a sparkling .667 attack percentage. She added three total blocks to lead Lamar.

Setter Alex Morford registered five kills, 34 assists and seven digs for Lamar. Angel Colyar chipped in with a team-high 13 digs.

Amari Deardorff and Melissa Toth each posted 16 kills for the Bobcats, while Lindy DeGeare added 15 in a balanced offensive attack. Setter Caleigh McCorquodale handed out 54 assists with 13 digs and three blocks.
