Lamar loses 3-0 to UTEP in MCM Elegante' Invitational

Sept. 10, 2011

Box Score

BEAUMONT - Jeane Horton and Xitlali Herrera each put down 14 kills Saturday in McDonald Gym to lead visiting UTEP to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-23) victory over Lamar University on day two of the MCM Elegante' Volleyball Invitational.

The Lady Cardinals now stand at 1-9 on the season after falling for the eighth straight match. UTEP, which suffered a 3-2 loss to Baylor in Friday's opening match, improved to 9-1 with the victory. Lamar will close out the tournament tonight at 7 against Baylor (7-2).

The Miners' offense was clicking on all cylinders as UTEP finished with 49 kills and a .307 attack percentage. Lamar was not so fortunate. The Lady Cardinals managed just 29 kills in the three-set match, and hit an anemic .109 as a team.

One bright spot for the Lady Cardinals was the defensive effort of libero Angel Colyar. The junior from Round Rock recorded a season-high 20 digs and kept Lamar alive in many of the points with her effort.

Offensively, the Lady Cardinals got a team-high nine kills from sophomore outside hitter Sierra Whittaker.

The Miners were led defensively by libero Stephanie Figueroa with 19 digs, while Herrera added four block assists.
