BEAUMONT - With the Lamar University spring football game set to kick off on Thursday evening at 6, the coaching staff held a draft on Tuesday afternoon at the Lamar Athletic Complex to select teams.
The red-white scrimmage, which will be known as The Crawfish Bowl, will be played at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The game will be four 10-minute quarters and is open to the public with free admission.
The Cardinals began spring training on Feb. 7, five weeks earlier than it did last year. The Crawfish Bowl will be the final action of the spring season and will bring to a close a solid month of practices.
"The practices have been spirited," said second-year head coach Ray Woodard. "I'm very excited with what I've seen this spring. I think we're a better football team than a year ago and we're in better overall condition."
The white team will be coached by associate head coach Brian Mayper who selected center Kyle Gillam with the No. 1 pick. Gillam is a 6-1, 265-pound sophomore from Lumberton.
The red team, which will be coached by defensive line coach Will Richard, countered with center Taylor Davis. Davis signed with Lamar in December and is a transfer from Missouri.
Former Silsbee star Jeremy Johnson was the first quarterback taken, selected by Mayper along with quarterback Doug Prewitt.
Soon to be senior Andre Bevil was picked by the red team at quarterback, while defensive end Jacody Coleman was the first defensive player taken in the draft.
"The coaches did a really good job of picking their teams," said Woodard. "I didn't know if we would have to move some players from one team to the other, but they look really even. We have a lot more depth this spring."
The Cardinals, who played football in 2010 for the first time since dropping the program after the 1989 season, will play as full members of the Southland Conference this fall. Lamar opens its regular season at home on Sept. 3 against Langston College.
