BEAUMONT, Texas - Ang Green sank three free throws with 1.1 seconds remaining to lift the Lamar University women's basketball team to a 69-67 win over visiting UTSA in a Southland Conference game at the Montagne Center on Saturday afternoon.
Green went to the line after being fouled by UTSA's Ashleigh Franklin while launching a 3-point shot. Green found the mark on all three attempts to send the partisan crowd of 1,291 fans home happy.
"There's some pressure in that situation, but I felt confident," Green said. "I had a similar situation in high school, so I knew what to expect."
Green's heroics were made necessary after UTSA's Amber Gregg hit a pair of free throws with 5.4 seconds remaining to give the Roadrunners a 67-66 lead. The Lady Cardinals quickly got the ball up the floor for Green's 3-point attempt and the subsequent foul by Franklin.
"We have no set play in that situation," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "We just had to get the ball up court as quickly as possible and get off a shot. Fortunately, it worked out well for us."
Kalis Loyd led Lamar (17-5 overall, 6-2 SLC) with 30 points and nine rebounds. Danielle Heithoff added nine points for the Lady Cardinals, while Green and Jenna Plumley added seven points apiece.
The win was Tidwell's 82nd at Lamar, putting him in a tie with Al Barbre, who went 82-62 in his five seasons at Lamar. Pat Park holds the school record with 109 wins, as she went 109-70 in six seasons at the helm of the Lady Cardinals.
Ashley Gardner led UTSA (9-12, 5-3) with 18 points. Gregg and Lyndi Thorman had 14 points apiece for the Roadrunners, while Franklin finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Lamar failed to make a 3-pointer in the game, the first time the Lady Cards went without a trey since March 6, 2006, at Stephen F. Austin, a span of 148 games.
Lamar returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Northwestern State in a conference game. Tickets are available at the official Web site of Lamar athletics: www.LamarCardinals.com, or by calling (409) 880-1715.
