CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Jenna Plumley's double-double led the Lamar University women's basketball team to a 75-64 Southland Conference victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday night. With the win, the Lady Cardinals (21-5 overall, 10-2 SLC) secured a berth in next month's State Farm Southland Conference Tournament.
Plumley had 18 points and 10 assists for Lamar, which ran its winning streak to five games. Monique Whittaker led Lamar with 24 points, while Kalis Loyd had 16 points for the Lady Cardinals.
Plumley was 6-of-12 from 3-point range for the Lady Cardinals, who drained 11 3-pointers as a team. Lamar outrebounded the Islanders 45-41, with Ang Green and Trashanna Smith grabbing seven boards apiece. Smith set a career high with seven steals as the Lamar defense forced the Islanders into 22 turnovers.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had a pair of players with double-doubles. Jessica Jammer had 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Anitra Jeffery finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Jade Davis added 11 points for the Islanders (2-23, 0-12), who suffered their 12th consecutive defeat.
Lamar, which remains one game behind McNeese State for the overall lead in the conference, returns to the Montagne Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the final home game of the season. Prior to the game, Lamar will honor seniors Plumley, Smith Adrianne Meengs and Myriam Igoufe.
